Rhino Resources and Halliburton deliver the first two exploration wells on Block 2914 in Namibia

Rhino Resources and Halliburton have successfully delivered two exploration wells on Block 2914 within Petroleum Exploration License (PEL) 85, located offshore Namibia. As operator of the block, Rhino benefited from Halliburton’s integrated services and collaborative approach, which played a key role in the project's success.

Notably, these are the first exploration wells in Namibia to be completed entirely using in-country infrastructure, made possible through Halliburton’s newly established operational bases in Walvis Bay, Swakopmund, and Lüderitz.

“This success is an example of what’s possible when world-class technology, local collaboration, and a shared long-term vision come together,” said Antoine Berel, Vice President of Halliburton Sub-Saharan Africa. “Our newly established infrastructure across Namibia enabled this discovery, which will help unlock Namibia’s energy potential and build the capacity to support the country’s future as an energy hub in Africa.”

As global attention grows around Namibia’s offshore basins, the success of this campaign is seen as setting a new benchmark for energy development in the region.

“At the onset of the drilling campaign, we communicated to our partners that Rhino’s exploration efforts in Namibia should simultaneously prove geological potential and deliver long-term benefits for the country,” said Travis Smithard, CEO of Rhino Resources. “The discoveries on Block 2914 are a promising start to this journey, which will contribute to the foundation we are laying for Namibia’s burgeoning oil and gas industry — one built on knowledge and skills transfer, local capacity building, and the upliftment of young Namibians.”

Supporting this long-term commitment, Rhino and Halliburton in October 2024 inaugurated the Rhino-Halliburton Technology Centre at the University of Namibia (UNAM) Southern Campus. This state-of-the-art facility is dedicated to advancing geoscience education and research across the country and represents a strategic investment in the next generation of Namibia’s energy leaders.

The joint effort between Rhino and Halliburton, centered on a collaborative and local-first approach, highlights the value both companies bring to Namibia. It also offers a forward-looking model for responsible and sustainable energy development, not only for Namibia but for the broader region.
