Repsol starts producing electricity at the company’s largest wind farm, located in Chile

Repsol has commenced electricity production at Antofagasta Phase 1, its largest wind farm to date and one of the biggest in Chile. Situated in the Taltal district of the Antofagasta region, the wind farm boasts a total installed capacity of 364 megawatts (MW).

With an investment close to €400 million, Antofagasta Phase 1 marks Repsol’s first fully self-developed renewable energy project in Chile. Following a 19-month construction period, the facility is expected to enter full commercial operation in the coming weeks. It will generate approximately 750 gigawatt-hours (GWh) annually—enough to meet the average electricity demand of around 220,000 Chilean households.

Repsol also plans to expand its renewable footprint in the region with the construction of Antofagasta Phase 2, which will contribute an additional 450 MW to its portfolio.

Previously, Repsol entered the Chilean market through a 50/50 joint venture with Ibereólica Renovables Group—Repsol Ibereólica Renovables Chile—which operates the Cabo Leones III (188 MW) and Atacama (166 MW) wind farms in the Atacama Desert’s Huasco province. In contrast, both phases of the Antofagasta wind farm are wholly owned by Repsol.

Renewable energy projects form a key part of Repsol’s strategy to advance its energy transition goals. The company currently operates nearly 4,000 MW of renewable energy capacity and holds a global development pipeline of around 60,000 MW across various stages.
