PETRONAS Delivers Malaysia's First Locally Blended SAF, Marking Breakthrough in Aviation Decarbonisation
PETRONAS has successfully delivered Malaysia’s first blended Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) for Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), marking a key milestone in establishing the company’s in-house capability and readiness to supply SAF on a continuous and scalable basis within the country.
Blended locally at PETRONAS’ facilities, the ISCC-certified SAF—compliant with CORSIA-eligible fuel standards—was transported directly to KLIA through Malaysian Refining Company’s (MRCSB) multi-product pipeline, ensuring seamless delivery via an integrated supply chain.
“PETRONAS is committed to advancing global decarbonisation efforts, particularly in supporting Malaysia’s net-zero ambition as a key enabler in the development of future fuels. SAF provides one of the most immediate solutions to decarbonising aviation. This pilot project is a long-term strategic investment to build in-house expertise through advancements in technology, infrastructure, and talent, enabling us to deliver reliable, cost-effective solutions to our partners and customers,” said Ahmad Adly Alias, Vice President of Refining, Marketing and Trading at PETRONAS.
He added, “This milestone positions us ahead in supporting the government’s SAF objectives under the 13th Malaysia Plan, reinforcing our commitment to national energy security and industrial growth.”
Between 1–16 September 2025, Malaysia Airlines will uplift the SAF for its daily MH2 service from Kuala Lumpur to London, representing a practical step in integrating SAF into routine operations.
“MAG is proud to lead Malaysia’s efforts in advancing sustainable aviation. Each flight powered by SAF shows that aviation decarbonisation is not a distant goal but an achievable reality today. Strong collaboration across the industry is vital to scale up SAF production and ensure it becomes more accessible and affordable. We remain committed to championing initiatives that accelerate SAF adoption in support of Malaysia’s and the global aviation industry’s green transition,” said Philip See, Group Chief Sustainability Officer of MAG.
This milestone underscores PETRONAS’ capability to provide scalable, cost-efficient SAF in Malaysia, with end-to-end solutions spanning procurement, certification, blending, and distribution in line with international sustainability standards.
As Malaysia’s primary gateway, KLIA plays a central role in enabling SAF growth. Its infrastructure supports the aviation sector in meeting CORSIA requirements.
“The introduction of locally blended SAF at KLIA marks a significant step in our sustainability journey. With Level 3 Airport Carbon Accreditation by ACI, we are embedding carbon reduction into every aspect of airport operations. This collaboration enhances our ability to support airlines in their decarbonisation efforts while building a sustainable aviation ecosystem that aligns with Malaysia’s net-zero goals and ensures future-ready airports,” said Dato’ Mohd Izani Ghani, Managing Director of Malaysia Airports.
