PETRONAS and Staatsolie Declare Commerciality for Sloanea Field, Marking Suriname’s First Gas Development Milestone

PETRONAS, through its wholly owned subsidiary PETRONAS Suriname E&P B.V. (PSEPBV), together with Staatsolie Maatschappij Suriname N.V. (Staatsolie), has reached a major milestone with the Declaration of Commerciality (DoC) for the Sloanea field in Block 52 — marking the first gas development milestone in Suriname’s growing deepwater energy sector.

The DoC signifies that the project is ready to advance from discovery to development, pending a final investment decision. This progress builds on the successful Sloanea-1 exploration in 2020 and reflects both parties’ confidence in Suriname’s offshore hydrocarbon prospects as well as their joint commitment to unlocking the country’s deepwater potential.

PETRONAS Vice President of International Assets, Upstream, Mohd Redhani Abdul Rahman, stated, “The DoC of Sloanea-1 confirms the field’s economic viability for development and future commercialisation. This milestone highlights the strong collaboration and mutual trust between PETRONAS and Staatsolie, anchored in technical excellence, environmental responsibility, and a shared mission to bring lasting benefits to the people of Suriname.”

Since signing the Production Sharing Contract for Block 52 in 2013, PETRONAS has recorded three significant discoveries within the block.

As operator of Block 52, PETRONAS holds an 80% participating interest, with the remaining 20% owned by Paradise Oil Company (POC), a Staatsolie subsidiary. PETRONAS also maintains interests in eight offshore blocks in Suriname — Blocks 9, 10, 48, 52, 53, 63, 64, and 66 — reinforcing its long-term commitment to the country’s energy development agenda.

This milestone further demonstrates PETRONAS’ focus on delivering high-value growth through strategic partnerships and technical expertise, while supporting Suriname’s emergence as a rising deepwater hub within the Suriname-Guyana Basin.
