OMV secures long-term supply of 67 GWh green electricity per year

OMV has finalized power purchase agreements (PPAs) with VERBUND and ImWind, securing an annual supply of 67 GWh of sustainable electricity. This amount is equivalent to the annual energy consumption of approximately 16,000 households. With this green energy supply, OMV will cover over 35 percent of the external electricity needs for the Schwechat refinery and the Adria Wien Pipeline (AWP), allowing the company to lower its carbon footprint and promote the use of renewable energy sources.

The sustainable power supplied to OMV is sourced from renewable energy, comprising 65 percent hydropower and 35 percent wind energy. This initiative is expected to help OMV reduce around 11,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually, totaling approximately 60,300 tons over the duration of the agreements. This transition will significantly decrease Scope 2 emissions from both the Schwechat refinery and the Adria Wien Pipeline.

“Our collaborations with VERBUND and ImWind will contribute to the reliable and sustainable energy supply to our facilities. We are advancing our ambitious decarbonization targets in our Strategy 2030. The partnerships for renewable energy play an important role in supporting the transition towards a low-carbon future and we will continue to expand our portfolio of PPAs,” says Alfred Stern, Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of OMV AG.

VERBUND, Austria’s leading electricity company, will supply OMV with 44 GWh of hydropower-derived electricity annually for four years, beginning in January 2025. Additionally, OMV has an agreement with ImWind, an Austrian pioneer in wind power and photovoltaics, which will last for eight years and provide an annual capacity of 23.5 GWh from wind energy. This supply is set to commence in November 2024.
