Maersk and Sotraser Announce Electric Truck Operations in Chile
To advance the decarbonisation of supply chains in Latin America, A.P. Moller - Maersk (Maersk) has teamed up with Chilean transport company Sotraser to introduce electric trucks into its logistics network. This move represents a major stride in reducing greenhouse gas emissions across regional logistics operations.
The partnership will deploy two types of electric trucks:
- Volvo FH Electric and FM Electric: These trucks are powered by 540-kWh batteries, offering a range of approximately 300 kilometers per charge.
- Foton EAuman 2554: Equipped with a 350-kWh battery, this model delivers a range of about 220 kilometers per charge.
Both truck types are capable of carrying 24 to 25 tons of cargo, fully compliant with Chilean regulations on weight and axle limits, while delivering performance comparable to conventional diesel-powered vehicles.
"As land transport demand grows, decreasing emissions solutions become crucial. This milestone reflects our commitment to reducing emissions across Latin America."
- Dean Rodin, Managing Director for the West Coast of South America at Maersk
In Santiago, the operation includes 20 charging stations operating simultaneously, with a total installed capacity of 1,200 kW. Using 600 kW split chargers, the system supports flexible energy distribution, offering charging options from 60 kW to 240 kW per connector. Notably, the entire operation runs on 100% renewable energy, certified through the International Renewable Energy Certificates (I-RECs).
The electric trucks are suited for urban, interurban, and port routes. Current operations cover high-traffic zones within the Metropolitan Region, city-wide distribution, and major interurban routes such as Santiago–Viña del Mar and Santiago–San Antonio. In Antofagasta, electric trucks are already active, servicing the route to the Port of Mejillones and transporting chemicals for the mining sector.
"The collaboration with Sotraser is a significant step forward. Chile's potential for electromobility in heavy-duty trucking is promising, with ongoing projects showcasing the benefits of electric trucks. We're pleased with the results so far, and it's a notable step for logistics in the region."
- Alexis Rodriguez, Head of Energy Transition Execution for Latin America at Maersk
"Integrating our 100% electric fleet into Maersk's operations is not just a milestone for Sotraser — it is a clear signal that the future of logistics is already underway. We are proud to be part of this transformation alongside a global leader like Maersk, and we are confident that this is just the first step on a journey we will build together, decreasing emissions and driving more efficienttransport solutions for Chile and South America."
- Pedro Peña Staub, Electromobility Manager at Sotraser
During the pilot phase, Maersk and Sotraser successfully carried out a fully electric transportation operation, completing 31 trips and covering more than 8,400 kilometers on routes including interurban connections within Santiago and the Santiago–San Antonio corridor.
This effort aligns with Maersk’s global commitment to reach net zero emissions by 2040. As part of its mid-term goals for land transportation, the company is actively exploring expansion opportunities in Brazil, Peru, Guatemala, Panama, and Uruguay. The aim is to offer customers a wider range of low-emission transportation alternatives to traditional combustion engine vehicles.
