Halliburton: Introducing EcoStar® eTRSV

The EcoStar® electric tubing-retrievable safety valve (eTRSV) is the world's first and only electric TRSV with proven field performance.

Halliburton Company, a leader in well completions technology, has introduced the EcoStar® electric tubing-retrievable safety valve (eTRSV), a next-generation innovation that advances the industry’s first electric TRSV, which won the OTC Spotlight on New Technology Award in 2017. Building on this success, the new EcoStar eTRSV eliminates hydraulic actuations in safety valve systems, solving a challenge that has persisted for over three decades.

Halliburton pioneered this technology in 2016 by installing the world’s first electric safety valve for a major operator—a system that remained fully operational for the well’s entire lifespan. By eliminating the need for extensive surface facilities, this innovation enhances operational efficiency, improves personnel safety, and optimizes field economics.

Designed as a fail-safe mechanism, the EcoStar eTRSV automatically closes in response to well incidents at the surface, ensuring the protection of personnel and the environment. It is built on Halliburton’s proven deepwater DepthStar® tubing-retrievable safety valve technology and incorporates field-tested magnetic coupling technology. By replacing hydraulic actuation with an electric system, the design enhances reliability by isolating the actuation mechanism from completion tubing fluid and pressure.

The EcoStar eTRSV features independent and redundant electro-mechanical actuation and control systems, offering more precise operation, real-time position sensing, and continuous valve health monitoring from the surface.

"As part of Halliburton’s all-electric portfolio, the EcoStar eTRSV marks another step toward the full electrification of wellbores. The EcoStar eTRSV builds on industry-leading safety valve technology to improve completion performance and maximize asset value for operators."
