fire at chevron el segundo refinery is now out

On Thursday, October 2, around 9:30 p.m., a fire broke out at Chevron’s El Segundo Refinery in a processing unit located near the facility’s southeast corner. The fire has since been fully extinguished, thanks to Chevron’s emergency response efforts supported by the El Segundo and Manhattan Beach fire departments. An internal investigation has been initiated to determine the cause of the incident.

Throughout the night, Chevron’s emergency response team worked to manage the situation, prioritizing the safety of employees, responders, and the surrounding community. All workers and contractors have been safely accounted for, with no injuries reported. As a precaution, Chevron’s Health, Safety, and Environmental team conducted mobile air quality monitoring in nearby areas.

Chevron is coordinating with local, state, and federal authorities—including CalOSHA, CALOSPR, and the South Coast Air Quality Management District—all of whom were notified and are overseeing the situation. The company is also providing ongoing updates to the California Energy Commission.
