Eni awarded the “Gold Standard reporting” from the United Nations Environmental Programme for its commitment to methane accountability

Eni has earned the “Gold Standard reporting” recognition from the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0) for its exemplary methane emissions reporting at the highest levels of data quality. OGMP 2.0, an initiative by the United Nations Environment Programme’s International Methane Emissions Observatory, sets a global benchmark for methane accountability and transparency in the oil and gas sector, essential for effective tracking and mitigation based on measurement-based data.

Since joining OGMP 2.0 in 2020, Eni has committed to setting reduction targets and enhancing the accuracy and transparency of its methane reporting. The company’s efforts were first acknowledged in 2023 under the “Gold Standard Pathway” for aligning its implementation plans with OGMP 2.0 standards. In 2024, Eni achieved the “Gold Standard reporting” status for reaching the highest levels of data quality.

Eni views natural gas as a key component of the energy transition, thanks to its affordability, reliability, versatility, and lower carbon footprint compared to other fossil fuels. However, the company emphasizes the need for global action to address methane leakage across the natural gas value chain. Eni aims to achieve near-zero methane emissions by 2030 and has already reduced its methane emissions by more than half between 2018 and 2023. With an Upstream methane intensity of 0.06% in 2023, Eni ranks among the leaders in the industry.

Collaboration is central to Eni’s methane reduction strategy. The company has been a founding member of initiatives such as UNEP’s OGMP (2014), the Oil and Gas Climate Initiative (OGCI), and Methane Guiding Principles (MGP). In 2023, Eni further strengthened its commitment by joining the Oil & Gas Decarbonization Charter (OGDC) and the Global Flaring and Methane Reduction Trust Fund (GFMR), led by the World Bank. These initiatives focus on reducing methane emissions, eliminating routine flaring, and fostering transparency and concrete action.

Eni has also entered partnerships with National Oil Companies (NOCs) to share its expertise in methane management and support broader methane reduction efforts across the sector.

Methane reduction is a key pillar of Eni’s decarbonization strategy, which also targets routine flaring reductions, energy efficiency improvements, and achieving Net Zero Scope 1+2 emissions for its Upstream business by 2030 and for the entire company by 2035.
