Eni and SONATRACH expand cooperation to reduce emissions in Algeria

Eni and SONATRACH have signed a new Memorandum of Intent to strengthen cooperation on concrete initiatives aimed at decarbonizing Algeria’s oil and gas sector and reducing emissions in line with international best practices.

The agreement builds on the cooperation launched in January 2023, when the two companies signed a three-year Memorandum of Intent focused on reducing gas flaring, increasing the value of recovered gas, and mitigating emissions from upstream operations in Algeria.

The new agreement expands the scope of collaboration to include additional decarbonization initiatives. Eni and SONATRACH will work together on natural CO₂ removal through forestry projects, while also enhancing efforts to monitor, quantify and reduce methane emissions through the adoption of relevant international oil and gas standards.

Under the 2023 agreement, the companies established a structured program of joint activities, including technical assessments, capacity-building programs and field visits. These efforts focused on identifying opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas and methane emissions while training technicians to conduct on-site measurements. The program identified several areas for improvement, including reducing fugitive and venting emissions, improving energy efficiency, developing renewable energy projects, reducing gas flaring, and assessing opportunities for carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS).

One notable initiative was a joint Leak Detection and Repair (LDAR) campaign covering approximately 800 kilometers of pipelines and around 7,500 monitoring points, resulting in a significant reduction in fugitive emissions. LDAR campaigns are now routinely carried out independently across all joint ventures operated by Eni and SONATRACH.

The companies have also completed baseline emissions assessments across six upstream assets operated by Eni and SONATRACH in Algeria.

Eni has operated in Algeria since 1981 and recorded net production of approximately 132,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2025. The company continues to strengthen its role as a leading international energy company while working closely with SONATRACH to support the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and advance the decarbonization of Algeria’s energy sector.
