Emission Reduction Reaches 1.2 Million Tons of CO2, Pertamina's Decarbonization Realization Surpasses the 2024 Target
PT Pertamina (Persero) is dedicated to advancing decarbonization efforts across all of its Sub-holdings in line with its emission reduction goals, aiming for Net Zero Emissions (NZE) by 2060 or earlier. By the third quarter (January - September) of 2024, Pertamina's Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) decarbonization initiatives had successfully reduced carbon emissions by 1,289,703 tons of CO2eq, surpassing the 2024 target of 1.09 million tons by 110%.
Fadjar Djoko Santoso, Vice President of Corporate Communication at Pertamina, emphasized that all Sub-holdings are actively contributing to carbon emission reduction through a variety of decarbonization programs.
Fadjar further explained that the Upstream Sub-holding has launched 128 decarbonization initiatives, followed by the Refining & Petrochemical Sub-holding with 60 programs, the Commercial & Trading Sub-holding with 18 programs, the Power & NRE Sub-holding with 14, and both the Integrated Marine Logistics (IML) and Gas Sub-holdings with four programs each.
“As part of further efforts, Pertamina aims to reduce methane emissions, a significant greenhouse gas (GHG) in addition to CO2. From an energy perspective, this economically valuable methane gas is also expected to enhance Pertamina's business contributions,” explained Fadjar.
In May 2024, Pertamina became a participant in the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0), a global initiative aimed at improving the measurement and control of methane emissions.
Fadjar also highlighted that Pertamina is working with the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC) to measure methane emissions across its upstream operations.
“The goal is to reduce methane emissions while commercializing the produced methane volume as a new business opportunity in the future,” Fadjar stated.
In addition, Pertamina is currently finalizing the scope 3 emission inventory data as a baseline for developing a scope 3 reduction roadmap. As of September 2024, Pertamina is also developing a checklist for the internal verification of GHG emissions that are monitored periodically.
“Pertamina is committed to maintaining ESG performance across all business lines to sustain its global ranking while strengthening Pertamina's image as an environmentally friendly world-class company,” concluded Fadjar.
Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement: Goal 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy, Goal 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth, and Goal 13 – Climate Action. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina's business lines and operations.
