Crowley Mariners Recognized with HERO Awards by American Waterways Operators

Crowley mariners have been honored by the American Waterways Operators (AWO), the foremost U.S. association for tug and barge operators, with the American Waterways Honor & Excellence in Rescue Operations (HERO) Award for their lifesaving efforts on the water in 2024.

In April, mariners aboard the tugboat *Guard* swiftly rescued a man who had fallen overboard from his sailboat near Anacortes, Washington. Similarly, in June, the crew of the tug *Apollo* was assisting a ship in San Francisco Bay when they witnessed a passenger fall overboard. The tug crew quickly alerted emergency responders and remained on-site until the individual was safely recovered.

“In the moments when our mariners rush to save a life, they don’t pause to consider the heroism of their actions. Their immediate response stems from a deep-rooted commitment to protecting lives. While I take pride in their heroic deeds, I am even more proud of their character, which compels them to act in emergencies,” said James C. Fowler, senior vice president and general manager of Crowley Shipping. “We thank AWO for acknowledging our mariners, and Crowley extends our heartfelt congratulations and gratitude to the crews of the *Guard* and *Apollo* for their exceptional achievements.”

The American Waterways Operators (AWO) introduced the American Waterways HERO Award in 2023 to honor the heroism of individuals in the American tugboat, towboat, and barge industry whose actions help prevent harm and save lives on the water daily.
