Cathay Cargo commemorates DB Schenker’s membership of its Corporate SAF Programme with a signing ceremony
DB Schenker has become the latest and largest contributor to Cathay's carbon-reduction initiative.
Cathay Cargo and DB Schenker held a signing ceremony on October 8 at Cathay City's headquarters to officially recognize DB Schenker's membership in the Cathay Corporate Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Programme.
The ceremony, attended by Cathay Director Cargo Tom Owen and DB Schenker Vice President Global Carrier Relations Susanne Stemmer, celebrated DB Schenker's recent achievement in becoming the largest contributor to Cathay's carbon-reduction programme, reflecting the commitment of both organizations to lowering carbon emissions.
Owen expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “We are thrilled to welcome DB Schenker as not only the newest member of the Cathay Corporate SAF Programme but also its biggest contributor. Their support as a key player in the air cargo industry is invaluable as we collaborate to decarbonize aviation. This event is a recognition of DB Schenker’s significant role in our shared goal of flying greener together.”
Established in 2022, the Cathay Corporate SAF Programme aims to combat climate change by allowing members to purchase Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) for use on Cathay Pacific and Cathay Cargo flights departing from Hong Kong and other locations. With a commitment to buy 878 tonnes of SAF (approximately 290,000 US gallons), DB Schenker is expected to help reduce over 2,600 tonnes of carbon emissions.
SAF can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 80% over its life cycle compared to traditional jet fuel, making it a vital component for the aviation sector's goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. In line with this, Cathay Pacific and Cathay Cargo aim to source SAF for 10% of their jet fuel consumption by 2030, complementing Cathay Cargo’s Fly Greener programme, which focuses on carbon offsetting through Gold Standard certified community and environmental projects.
DB Schenker began incorporating SAF into its transport operations in 2020 as part of its commitment to reducing carbon emissions. Alexander Mentgen, Global Air Freight Sustainability Manager at DB Schenker, remarked, “SAF is already enabling change today. Our new alliance with Cathay Cargo further strengthens our commitment to sustainability and our leadership in the aviation sector.”
Susanne Stemmer also expressed her excitement about the partnership, stating, “We are looking forward to collaborating with Cathay Cargo, which will contribute to a more sustainable future for our industry and strengthen our long-standing global partnership.”
