bp confirms production start-up from the New Gas Consortium project in Angola

bp has confirmed the start-up of gas production from the Quiluma field in Angola, part of the New Gas Consortium (NGC) project operated by Azule Energy. The announcement marks another milestone in Azule Energy’s strong track record of project start-ups and exploration successes. Azule Energy is a 50:50 joint venture between bp and Eni.

Initial production from the Quiluma field is expected to reach around 150 million standard cubic feet (mmscf) of gas per day, with output projected to increase to 330 mmscf per day by the end of 2026.

The NGC project represents Angola’s first non-associated gas development. Gas from the shallow-water offshore Quiluma field is transported to an onshore processing facility before being supplied to the Angola LNG plant for export.

Azule Energy operates the NGC project with a 37.4% stake. Other partners include Cabinda Gulf Oil Company (CABGOC) with 31%, Sonangol E&P with 19.8%, and TotalEnergies with 11.8%, while ANPG serves as the national concessionaire.

“The safe delivery of the NGC project is another example of bp’s strategic progress and demonstrates what strong partnerships and collaboration can deliver. This project marks an important step for Angola’s energy system and strengthens the country’s energy mix as it looks to enhance its position as a global player in the natural gas market.”

Gordon Birrell, bp’s executive vice president for production & operations and Azule board member, said: "The safe delivery of the NGC project is another example of bp’s strategic progress and demonstrates what strong partnerships and collaboration can deliver. This project marks an important step for Angola’s energy system and strengthens the country’s energy mix as it looks to enhance its position as a global player in the natural gas market.”

In November 2025, project partners officially inaugurated the gas treatment plant in Soyo, northern Angola. The start-up of the NGC project represents the latest in a series of upstream achievements for Azule Energy. Earlier, in July 2025, the company began production from the Agogo field under the Agogo Integrated West Hub (Agogo IWH) project in Block 15/06 offshore Angola. This was followed by the start-up of the Ndungu development in February 2026.

Since the beginning of 2025, Azule Energy has also reported four hydrocarbon discoveries. These include the Algaita-01 well and the Gajajeira-01 gas discovery in Angola, as well as the Volans-1X and Capricornus-1X discoveries in Namibia’s Orange Basin.

Meanwhile, bp announced a total of 12 discoveries in 2025 across multiple basins worldwide. During the same period, the company brought seven major upstream projects online—five of them ahead of schedule. These projects are located in Trinidad and Tobago (two), the UK North Sea, Egypt, Mauritania and Senegal, and the Gulf of America (two). The progress supports bp’s plan to deliver 10 major project start-ups globally by the end of 2027.
