bp announces gas discovery offshore Egypt with fast-track potential
bp has reported a major gas and condensate discovery offshore Egypt after successfully drilling the Denise W-1 exploration well in the Temsah Concession in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The find is located about 70 kilometres offshore in waters around 95 metres deep, and sits less than 10 kilometres from existing infrastructure—offering strong potential for operational synergies and accelerated development. The reservoir shares similar characteristics with the nearby Temsah and Akhen fields, which have been in production since 2001, with high-quality gas-bearing sandstone identified across an interval of roughly 90 metres.
The Denise W-1 well follows a binding agreement signed in July 2025 with EGPC and EGAS to extend the Temsah Concession for another 20 years.
bp holds a 50% stake in the project alongside Eni, which owns the remaining share and serves as operator of the Denise Development Lease through Petrobel.
Earlier in the year, bp secured two additional offshore exploration blocks: North-East El Alamein Offshore (fully owned by bp) and West El Hammad Offshore (25% bp, 75% Eni as operator), both located near existing infrastructure.
In addition, bp recently deployed the DS-12 drilling rig to carry out a program of five confirmed wells and three optional wells in complex deepwater areas, supporting efforts to boost domestic gas supply in line with Egypt’s rising energy demand.
The company has also expanded into new territory by signing an agreement with GANOPE for Block 6 in the Red Sea, marking entry into a promising exploration frontier.
Having operated in Egypt for more than 63 years, bp continues to play a key role in developing the country’s energy sector through partnerships and sustained investment.
This discovery represents bp’s second exploration success this year, following a total of 12 discoveries in 2025, further strengthening its resource base to support long-term organic growth.
